CSUMB and SLEWTHS

I will say until the moment I retire that my work at SLEWTHS and the courses I took at CSUMB was what got me to where I am today.

In the summer of 2006 I took part in a certificate program through California State University of Monterey Bay. I spent 5 weeks in Moss Landing, CA taking two classes under the direction of Dr. Jenifer Hurley "Techniques and Theories of Animal Training" and also "Working with Marine Mammals" during my stay I also took part in an awesome 10 day internship at the marine labs.

It was one of the most incredible and influental experiences I have undertaken. It opened my eyes to a lot of aspects in the field. I was able to gain a certificate in Begining Marine Mammalogy through my experiences there- which looks dang sexy on my resume.

I also had the incredible oppertunity to take part in a live animal transport- moving Sake, one of the facility's animals, to LA to be filmed for a roll in Ellen's American Express commercial. THAT was awesome! We kept Sake in the back of a u-haul while on grounds for the shooting...with a pool and a fence blocking the front portion. The u-haul kept us within regulations were marine mammals must have at least 3 walls around them. Yes, I did see Ellen! She walked past me on the way to the bathroom...it was exciting.

During the shoot, I stood off camera, holding people back to create a clear path for Sake should she decide she did not want to be on the set. She did amazing with Jen and Jen did amazing with her- the trust those two have is amazing. I will never forget that experience of being there.

Sake is shown twice- once after the Kangaroo...but most obviously during the last few seconds when it shows Ellen facing the audience and it shows the American Express logo- she is clapping infront of the audience. Fun fact: That really is not Ellen! That is her look-a-like! Also, the audience was not there, and was edited into the shot after filming.
